Joseph Vernon of Sparrowpit, Derbyshire, 1774-1857
Joseph Vernon was born in 1774 at Knowl Top Farm in Sparrowpit, Derbyshire, the village that his ancestors had lived in for over 15o years. He was baptised on Monday 16 May 1774 at the church of St Charles King and Martyr in Peak Forest.
He grew up in Sparrowpit with his parents Francis Vernon and Hannah (née Lomas), the fourth of nine children.
On Sunday 12 Jul 1801, at the age of 27, Joseph married a local girl Ann Jowle, age 18, at the parish church in Chapel-en-le-Frith. Joseph continued in his father's footsteps as a farmer, and over a 25-year period from 1801-1826 Joseph and Ann had 13 children.
In 1851, Joseph was living at the Three Tuns inn, the village's only pub, where has working as the innkeeper.
He made his will on 7 February 1849 and in it left bequests to his sons Enoch, Thomas, and Samuel (who was left a field at Peaslow - now known as Peaslows Farm and located just west of Sparrowpit). He left a sum of money to his sons John and Francis as well as to Robert and Ann Vernon, the children of his late son Joseph. He left his land at Stonyford to his daughter Elizabeth Joule, made bequests to his daughters Ann Heathcott and Hannah Mellor, and left the sum of £50 to his daughter Mary Hallam (wife of the village blacksmith, John Hallam). He outlived his wife Ann by 10 years, and died on 23 Dec 1857 at Sparrowpit.
