John Vernon, yeoman of Perry Head & Sparrowpit, Derbyshire, 1630-1695
John Vernon was born in Peak Forest, Derbyshire in 1630. He was baptised at the local parish church of Chapel-en-le-Frith, St Thomas Becket, on 13 Feb 1630 (there not yet being a church in Peak Forest), described as "John son of Francis Vernon of the Forest".
His father Francis had previously been resident at nearby Ford in Chapel-en-le-Frith (in 1626), and in or slightly before 1629 had moved to the area known as Perry (including Perry Foot and Perry Head) near Sparrowpit in Peak Forest. He was a husbandman, and in September 1648 a lease was granted "to Francis Vernon of the Peak Forest husbandman of the tenement at Perry Head and enclosed land of ten acres one rood, in the Peak Forest.
Of the seven children born to Francis and Alice, only John and his younger brother Francis 1736-1706 (a husbandman of Smalldale, Peak Forest) appear to have survived into adulthood. John's mother Alice died in July 1645, when John was only 15 years old, and was buried at Chapel-en-le-Frith on 7 July - "Alice, the wife of Francis Vernon of Peak Forest". John's father Francis died four years later at Perry Head, in 1649.
John's first child was born in 1649, meaning he must have married his wife Anne very shortly before this date (he being only 19 years old at this time). A marriage record has not been traced, suggesting it did not take place at Chapel-en-le-Frith church. John and Anne went on to have ten children between 1649-1670.
John continued in his father's footsteps as a husbandman in and around Perry in Peak Forest, and in 1670 is mentioned in a deed of property - a "tenement and land at Perry Head, great pasture called Howett Low and herbage of the Great Lane or highway thereunto adjoining".
John made his will on 1 Nov 1694 and refers to property held in the parishes of Peak Forest (Perry), Chapel-en-le-Frith (Nabsitch) and Edale (Edale Head), as well as numerous family members - his son Joseph is to maintain his wife Anne during her widowhood. Also mentioned are: John Vernon son of his son Enoch; his son Francis; his daughters Esther Vernon, Sarah Vernon, Alice Longden, Anne Palfreyman and Mary Barber. Probate was granted on 29 April 1695 and the appraisal of his goods took place in March 1695, indicating he died shortly before this date. He was almost certainly buried at Peak Forest.
