Francis Vernon of Sparrowpit, Derbyshire, 1737-1822
Francis Vernon was the fourth generation of Vernons to be born in the small village of Sparrowpit. He was born in 1737 and baptised on Thursday 17 Oct 1737 at the parish church in Peak Forest.
His father Enoch worked in the village as the master blacksmith and had married his mother Hannah née Fletcher three years previously. The family lived in Sparrowpit, Francis being the eldest son and third child of a total of 11 siblings born between 1735 and 1756.
Francis, then aged 29, married 19-year-old Hannah Lomas from neighbouring Chapel-en-le-Frith on Thursday 23 Oct 1766 at the parish church of Peak Forest. The couple went on to have nine children, three daughters and six sons, born between the years 1767-1783.
Francis worked as a farmer and it is thought that he resided with his family at Knowl Top Farm, located next to the village inn.
He died at the grand age of 85, in the January of 1822. He was buried in the churchyard of Peak Forest parish church on 31 Jan 1822. His wife Hannah died three years later.
